I get asked this question all the time: what evidence is there that Energy Medicine has any validity. Depending on who’s asking the question my answer can range from very technical discussions on the similarities between energy in the meridians and electromagnetic current flow, complete with writing out Maxwell’s equations during some discussions.
While such discussions can be fun (I love watching the horror in people’s faces when I start talking about differential equations as the relate to energy flow in the human body), it really isn’t a discussion that’s all that useful.
For me the most compelling evidence of the validity of Energy Medicine is the length of time they have bee used throughout the world. For example, there is evidence to suggest that acupuncture – one of the oldest forms of Energy Medicine – has been in use for five thousand years. In all likelihood, it’s been around longer, but five thousand years is still a pretty long time.
Another energy system common to several types of Energy Medicine and Energy Healing is the Chakras. Use of the chakras in healing was first mentioned in the Hindu Upanishads scriptures which would put their first use at around 3200 BCE. There are other components of Energy Medicine that trace their use to antiquity, but these two examples will suffice for our considerations here. [click to continue…]

In conventional medicine there is a lot of concern about drug interactions. If you’re taking a statin drug will it interact with my blood pressure medication or my arthritis medication or my anti-anxiety medication?
There’s good reason to ask such questions because testing of medications is very expensive and the poor multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies would rather spend their money on marketing than on ensuring their drugs are safe. So if there are concerns about drug interaction between the various medications you might be taking, you may find that you’re on your own.
However, what if you want to give Energy Medicine a try, but you’re not ready to turn forsake conventional medicine just yet? Is it safe to use Energy Medicine techniques alongside conventional medicine, or acupuncture, or aroma therapy, or other healing modalities?
Consider this: Energy Medicine doesn’t seek to treat any dis-ease of the body the way that conventional medicine claims to.Energy Medicine is only concerned about the harmonious balance and interaction of the various energy systems that animate your body.
It’s been my experience that the experience of many of my Energy Medicine colleagues that, using Energy Medicine as a complement to other healing modalities and conventional medicine can help to increase the effectiveness of those treatment strategies.
But you should consult your health care professional and let them know that you’re using Energy Medicine as a component of your personal wellness strategy. Who knows… you may even run across a medical doctor who’s actually heard of it!
